What Is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of selected structures beneath the skin.

What can it show?

Depending on the body area and clinical question, ultrasound may help a clinician examine tendons, muscles, ligaments, bursae, and some joint structures while observing movement in real time. Its usefulness depends on the structure being assessed, the equipment, and the operator's training.

How does an ultrasound examination work?

A clinician applies gel to the skin and moves a handheld probe over the area. The probe sends and receives sound waves to create images. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation.

Can ultrasound replace an MRI?

Not in every situation. Ultrasound and MRI have different strengths and limitations. The appropriate test depends on the suspected condition, the anatomy involved, and the clinical question. Some problems require other imaging or further evaluation.

How is ultrasound used with injections?

For selected procedures, real-time ultrasound may help visualize anatomy and guide needle placement. Whether image guidance is appropriate depends on the procedure and individual circumstances.

Questions to ask

  • What question are we trying to answer with this test?
  • Would another imaging test be more appropriate?
  • How might the findings change the treatment plan?
  • What are the limitations of ultrasound for my concern?
